Mowing Frequency Depends on the Season — Here’s Your Guide

One of the most common questions Fredericksburg homeowners ask us is how often they should mow. The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all — it depends on grass type, season, and weather conditions. Here’s what the pros at Hibaxum recommend for Central Virginia lawns.

Spring (March–May): Every 5–7 Days

Spring is peak growing season for the fescue and Bermuda blends common in our area. Cool nights and warm days trigger rapid growth. Plan on mowing weekly — sometimes twice a week during April’s growth spurt.

Summer (June–August): Every 7–10 Days

Heat stress slows growth. Raise your mowing height to 3.5–4 inches to shade the soil and retain moisture. Avoid mowing during peak heat (10am–4pm) to reduce stress on both you and your grass.

Fall (September–November): Every 7–10 Days

Growth picks back up as temperatures cool. This is also the time for overseeding and fall cleanup services. Keep mowing until growth stops — usually late November in Fredericksburg.

Winter: As Needed

Most Fredericksburg lawns go dormant by December. You may need one final low cut before winter sets in.

The One-Third Rule

Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. Cutting too aggressively shocks the plant and opens the door for weeds and disease.
